I love the challenge of photography and the people I get to meet, like last summer when I photographed brothers Ty and Taden Rattie for airdrielife magazine.
At the time, Ty , 23, hadn't yet earned a full-time roster with the NHL's St. Louis Blues, and Taden , 18, played for the Western Hockey League's Red Deer Rebels. Since August, Ty did make the cut with the Blues, but was then put on waivers early in the New Year and picked up by the Carolina Hurricanes. I like to think it was a bit of foretelling on the publisher's part to have me use a red backdrop instead of blue.
Taden was also traded to the WHL's Vancouver Giants in September 2016.
The two brothers came over to my home studio where we had an hour to take photos and do an interview for the story. I allotted 20 minutes for photos and off we went. Keeping things looking natural can be tricky and I wanted a few candid images, so I asked Taden to re-tape his stick. I grabbed him some tape from my hockey bag and off we went. I like that it made it look like a teachable moment with the older Ty giving his tall younger brother some pointers.
